La campagna internazionale per la messa a bando delle Mutilazioni Genitali Femminili

 
 

La Campagna di Non C’è Pace Senza Giustizia, dell'Inter-African Committee on Traditional Practices Affecting the Health of Women and Children (IAC- CIAF), della rete EURONET e dell'Associazione La Palabre, ha come obiettivo la promozione dell'adozione di una Risoluzione di messa al bando universale delle mutilazioni genitali femminili (MGF) da parte della 65a Assemblea Generale delle Nazioni Unite.


Il nostro lavoro consiste nell'accrescere l'informazione e la sensibilizzazione dei paesi membri, delle agenzie e delle istituzioni che operano nell’ambito delle Nazioni Unite, accrescendo la consapevolezza del pubblico internazionale sulle MGF e sulle azioni che l’Assemblea generale dell’ONU, gli Stati interessati e la società civile stanno mettendo in atto.


Le mutilazioni genitali femminili sono una violazione dei diritti umani e una forma di violenza contro le donne. Il termine descrive tutte le procedure che implicano la parziale o totale rimozione degli organi genitali femminili o qualsiasi altro danno arrecato agli organi genitali della donna.


Le MGF sono praticate prevalentemente in 28 paesi africani ma anche nella penisola araba, nel Medio Oriente e nel sudest asiatico. Le MGF erano praticate in secoli recenti anche in Europa e in Nord America, dove l’immigrazione ha reintrodotto il fenomeno nei ultimi decenni, così come in Australia, Nuova Zelanda e in alcune parti dell’Africa dove non era presente.


Ad oggi in 19 dei paesi africani più afflitti dalla pratica é finalmente vietato mutilare. L’accelerazione dell’impegno legislativo in molti paesi é anche frutto di una mobilitazione internazionale che ha visto risultati straordinari quali l’adozione nel 2003 e l’entrata in vigore nel 2005 del Protocollo dell’Unione Africana sui Diritti delle Donne in Africa, che all’Articolo 5 prescrive l’adozione di legislazioni nazionali contro le MGF.


Il crescente impegno dimostrato anche a livello internazionale dagli Stati interessati e dalla stessa comunità internazionale, così come l’impegno della società civile africana nel promuovere strumenti internazionali che aprano varchi politici a livello locale, si traducono in una richiesta sempre più netta di una messa al bando internazionale delle MGF.
